My high school buddy played a Tele, and he patched it through a Carvin amp. After he tuned the strings down a half step, he got some nasty distortion. I don't remember if he had a fuzz box or not. This was in the mid 1970's. He also used a Fender twin reverb.

Strange how months before Never Mind The Bollocks was recorded, that Spedding was using the EXACT setup Jones "used" on the recording. A Les Paul, 70's Fender Twin amp and MXR Phase Pedal. Haha. What a "coincidence".

The closest I have to this (not EVEN close tbh) was being flipped off by Tom and Jeff from Slayer during a Primus set, so I flipped them off right back not knowing who they were until Les said something about them and they stepped out a bit and waved at the crowd. Laughed my ass off! I did stop a kid from throwing mud at Tom a few years later so we're even.

What I cant stand about Black metal is how most of the riffs without tons of distortion wouldn't be heavy whatsoever. They just turn the gain up to 10 and treble up to 10 thinking oh yeah this is heavy . Play any Burzum song without barely any distortion and you will see that it sounds like all the 70s metal bands. Even if the riffs are heavy they are almost inaudible. Bleach Era Nirvana is technically more heavier than black metal.

You got it, the main solo is easy to do, but you got the Spitty part. Dan Armstrong had a Fuzz that plugged into the guitar itself, real small square box pedals, Other than that back then you had the NuFuzz, Maestro/Gibson, and Tonebenders. I think you came as close As I ever heard for sure. Supposedly one of the Strings on his guitar was a bit wronky at the time, and one could retune the A string to make it easier to play for sure. But I think you really Nailed it good and SKRONKY for sure.

I know there'd be a lot of negative comments on this video, but I'm inclined to agree that the 2nd wave of Black Metal is not only super derivative but kinda insulting to the first wave of Black Metal. It's very similar to 70s UK Punk ripping off the American punk bands like the MC5 and the Stooges or Led Zeppelin with blues musicians, in which they took someone else's art and didn't expand on anything. They stole it and leech off of it. Should it be surprising, then this scene attracted people like Euronymous or Varg, who were from a higher class than any of their biggest influences? They're vampires that suck the blood off of hard-working artists like Tom G Warrior, who pour their heart and soul into their music. Fighting tooth and nail to even release it whilst people like Euronymous have the leisure time to learn how they were able to get their sound. I am definitely singling Euronymous out because of how exploitative he was as a person since he had used his own band mates' death to boost his reputation in the Norwegian Black Metal scene.

Yep and the kicker is on its own as music it failed. You could find Mayhem albums in bargain bins 5 at a time over the small European distribution they had. Even AFTER the Kerrang cover the 2nd didn't get a huge pop. It was a decade later after the internet infiltrated homes did the story spread which hyped the bands.

What a crazy moment. This video just helped me solve A conundrum I've had for about a decade now. I've been a Forbidden fan for years and years, but are around 10 or so years ago I started getting into Nevermore. Specifically the album Dreaming Neon Black, and I could not help but notice just how much it sounded like Twisted Into Form and especially Distortion era Forbidden, I couldn't figure out why. Only now today do I find out that was probably because Tim Calvert was a part of all of these albums, and it all makes sense now. Rest in peace to a man who, without me realizing it, played such a big part in my musical journey and taste.

One of these days I’ll try and bug Ritchie’s tech to send me gut shots of “the Marshall”. He showed me pics on his phone but they weren’t gut shots. He told me if I asked Ritchie about it he would interrupt me and say “boooorrrringgg” 😂. Btw you can see the treble booster he was using for machine head in some of the pictures from one of the anniversary box sets, they’re available online. I’ve never heard anyone get closer than that guy @mglalub or what ever his account is, he makes the modded major clones WITH Blackmore mods and it sounds STUPID close. I’ve still never heard anyone get the smoke on the water tone perfect tho. There’s so much compression, whether it’s from a cranked tube amp power section and speakers square waving or maybe there’s also some 1176 used in the mix as well. idk…

Not sure if you've seen the Grundy interview, but Steve is a bit of a lightweight when it comes to drinking, which is why he got pissd so quickly in the green room before the interview, and he was so bad at playing live in the early days.

Hmmm. Just a coincidence Spedding released a single imitating the greatest guitarists in the world in one song right? didn't make the rumor up. It's been front and center pre internet. I just know how diabolical the average guitarist sounds at this short stage of playing in the studio.

@@CIRCLEOFTONE I see that you ignored the photo question, Spedding is not in that photo. I agree wholeheartedly that Chris Spedding is a fantastic guitarist, I happen to be a fan of his work. But, don't you suppose that Chris Thomas and Bill Price might've made Steve sound far better with multiple overdubs than he could achieve live on stage? One other factor that you probably don't know, is that the Pistols had a back-up plan guitarist, just in case Steve couldn't play good enough, in the shape of Steve New, if anyone was going to play instead of Steve it would've been him.
